“Genetics load the gun and environment pulls the trigger.”  ~Unknown

The maintenance of health and the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases are influenced by naturally occurring nutrients in foods. In addition to supplying the nutrients for producing energy, a large number of dietary chemicals are bioactive – that is, they alter the regulation of biological processes and, either directly or indirectly, the expression of genetic information. Nutrients not only alter health but also disease initiation, progression, and severity. The study and application of gene-nutrient interactions are called nutritional genomics or Nutrigenomics.

Pharmacogenomics is the study of how genes affect a person’s response to drugs. This relatively new field combines pharmacology (the science of drugs) and genomics (the study of genes and their functions) to develop effective, safe medications and doses that will be tailored to a person’s genetic makeup.  Nutrigenomics and Pharmacogenomics are both fundamental to the treatment of disease and maintenance of optimal health.
